The School of Politics and Global Studies awards over $40,000 worth of scholarships each year to exemplary students. Opportunities to earn scholarships are based on academics, experience, personal stories and financial need and are listed in detail below.

Description
Each spring, the School of Politics and Global Studies offers up to three Director’s Scholarships in the amount of $1,000. Political Science, Global Studies, International Relations, and Politics and the Economy majors are eligible to apply for these scholarships.
The scholarships are competitive and are based upon an evaluation of the applicant’s personal statement, academic performance, extracurricular and/or work activity, and faculty recommendation. To be considered, an applicant must have earned at least 45 credit hours at ASU with a minimum cumulative ASU grade point average of 3.0. Transfer students must have completed at least 15 credit hours at ASU. AP or high school dual enrollment credits are not acceptable and graduating seniors are not eligible. Financial need will be taken into account in awarding the scholarship.
Interested students should complete the portal app information requirements and submit a 500 word personal statement detailing postgraduate plans and career goals, a current resume or curriculum vitae, a letter of recommendation from an SPGS faculty member, and a current FAFSA. An additional statement/clarification of financial circumstances may be submitted.
Description
Calvin M. Holman served as an Arizona Legislator from 1975 to 1984. Throughout his life, Cal was active in the politics of north Phoenix, Scottsdale and Paradise Valley and a staunch believer in the power of grassroots politics. As servant leader and advocate for social justice, he readily gave a hand-up to those in need.
In December 2007, Cal was tragically killed in an automobile accident and the Calvin M. Holman Political Science Scholarship was established in his memory to recognize a political science student who embodies those attributes inherent in Cal — community activism, ethics, and a selfless spirit. The scholarship amount typically ranges between $1,000 and $2,000.
Criteria include:
- An undergraduate political science major (with junior or senior status) on the Tempe campus
- An individual who has interest in a legislative career or legislative policy area
- A U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Has a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher
Description
Political Science at Arizona State University is proud to announce the competition for the undergraduate Barrett Political Science Scholarship. Thanks to the inspiration and generosity of Craig and Barbara Barrett, Political Science is able annually to name a Barrett Political Science Scholar — a designation that brings not only distinction to the student but also an award that typically ranges from $1,000 and $2,000.
The winner will be selected on the basis of the excellence of her or his academic record and her or his leadership and community involvement.
Description
Political Sciences awarded the first Herman R. Frazier Scholarship in fall 2002. The scholarship is given to a deserving political science student each year. The scholarship amount is typically around $750.
To celebrate and honor Herman Frazier’s lifetime achievements in sports and politics, his friends and colleagues initiated the Herman R. Frazier Scholarship Endowment to benefit undergraduate students in political science. The scholarship is given to a deserving political science student each year. Students are invited to apply by completing the application and writing a brief essay on the relationship between government and/or politics and sports. Herman Frazier is a 1977 graduate of ASU with a B.S. in Political Science.
In 2002, Herman became the first ASU graduate to ever receive the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award, presented each year to former student-athletes who have made significant professional and civic contributions since completing their intercollegiate eligibility 25 years ago. Herman Frazier is a talented and accomplished administrator as well as a world-class collegiate and Olympic athlete. Herman is currently the deputy athletics director and chief of staff at Syracuse University.

This undergraduate research scholarship endowment was generously established by ASU Alumnus Ken Behringer, ‘74 B.A., ’78 JD, ’88 MBA, to support scholarships for political science students in the School of Politics and Global Studies in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University.
The scholarship amount typically ranges from $1,000 and $2,000 and is awarded annually to an undergraduate interested in pursuing a research project or paper in a political science class, study abroad or honors thesis.
Description
Political Science at Arizona State University Tempe campus seeks applications for the Norma F. Schuessler Scholarship. The scholarship amount typically ranges from $1,000 and $3,000.and is awarded each spring to an undergraduate student who will be continuing classes at ASU, has amassed a strong academic record in the face of unusual or uncommon challenges and demonstrates financial need.
Ms. Schuessler, mother of Ruth S. Jones — the first tenured woman in the ASU Department of Political Science and the first woman to chair Political Science at ASU — wanted to provide financial assistance to a student who has met obstacles or challenges on the path to completing an undergraduate degree.
Description
The family of Ross Rice established an award in his honor. Ross was the founding member of the Political Science at ASU, which at one time was part of ASU’s Department of History.
Ross was for a long time the curator of the Carl Hayden papers in ASU’s Hayden Library, and just prior to Ross’s retirement, he completed an extensive biography of Carl Hayden, Arizona’s first U.S. congressman and first U.S. senator. The scholarship amount typically ranges from $500 and $1,000.
Each year, the Ross Rice Award shall be presented to the outstanding political science undergraduate that best combines academic excellence and outstanding service. For the purposes of this award, “service” may include, but is not limited to, community service, volunteer work and involvement in campus or departmental organizations.
The first Ross Rice Award was given in 1987. This award may be renewed, at the discretion of the Selection Committee in the Political Science, ASU Tempe campus. Financial need is not a factor in awarding this scholarship.
Description
This scholarship was established in 2005 to honor the memory of Sarah Anne McNeil, a Political Science and Kinesiology double major who was killed in a car accident. As a way of honoring her industry, spirit, and character, this scholarship is intended to recognize students who excel in the classroom and whose boundless energy sparks positive results throughout the community.
Students who receive this scholarship will be recognized as "McNeil Scholars." The scholarship amount typically ranges from $2,500 and $3,500.
The applicant who receives this award may reapply in subsequent year.
Description
The family of Zachary Marco established this endowed scholarship to support an excelling undergraduate student who is participating in the Capital Scholars Program. The scholarship amount typically ranges from $1,000 and $1,500.
Zachary excelled at ASU as a political science major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and an honors student in the Barrett Honors College. He was in the Junior Fellows program, a page in the Arizona Legislature and aspired to be a legislative intern, a Capital Scholar and an attorney. During his junior year, Zachary was tragically killed near campus in October 2010.
Requirements
*Only applicants that meet all of the following requirements will be considered for the scholarship
- An undergraduate student
- Admitted into the Capital Scholars program
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher
- For students who have established an ASU GPA but also have transfer credit, the student’s combined transfer and ASU cumulative GPA must be a 3.50 or higher at the time of application.
Consideration
Preferential consideration will be given to applicants who meet the above requirements and demonstrate the following:
- Pursuing either a political science or philosophy major.
- Financial need

Description
The School of Politics and Global Studies awards each year the William D. Kavan Scholarship. The scholarship is for an undergraduate junior or senior Political Science major in the School of Politics and Global Studies within the College of Liberal Arts and Science for the next academic year. The scholarship amount typically ranges from $500 and $1,500.

Mario Diaz earned a bachelor of science in Political Science from ASU in 1991. Mr. Diaz credits Eduardo Delci, a former student advisor, for offering tremendous support that played a critical role in his degree attainment. This award provides scholarship support Hispanic undergraduate students within the School of Politics and Global Studies. The scholarship amount will be between $800 to $2,000.
Julian Eli Lehrer was a fourth-year Political Science major at Arizona State University when he passed away on July 1, 2020. Julian possessed a passion for politics and was guided by a rooted set of principles and beliefs. Months before he passed away, Julian wrote, “Our goal is to ensure that every ASU student eligible to vote is registered to vote and provided a space to engage in the political process."
Through this scholarship, his stepfather, Donald L. Seigel, wishes to honor Julian’s life — which held so much love and promise — and create opportunities for ASU students who reflect Julian’s courageous spirit of advocacy.
This Scholarship will provide scholarship support for undergraduate students studying political science, who maintain a 3.25 GPA and demonstrate financial need as defined by ASU Financial Aid and Scholarship Services. Preference shall be given to applicants who demonstrate advocacy for marginalized individuals and/or communities and/or participate in Young Democrats at ASU.
The scholarship amount will be between $4,500 to $5,000.

Global Studies International Experience Travel Grant
Description
SPGS also offers travel grants for students completing their SGS International Experience. Funds may be used to help offset airfare costs for completing the International Internship major requirement. Awards are based on financial need, and academic merit (GPA of 2.5 and above).
Students must be enrolled in SGS 484 or its equivalent as approved by SPGS, be Global Studies majors and be enrolled full-time. Students must file the FAFSA application at the Student Financial Assistance Office for the current academic year. Travel grants may be used for internship related airfare only. Travel must be completed within 12 months of receipt of the award.
