Application Deadlines 

Students must have an internship secured, all necessary paperwork submitted to the Internship Coordinator and complete the application in Handshake by the dates indicated. Learn more about how you can apply and receive INR 484: International Relations Internship credit below.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Overall GPA ≥2.5, GPA in POS and SGS courses ≥ 3.0
  • Completed at least 50 semester hours of credit.
  • Completed POS 160/360 (Global/World Politics) or SGS 101/301 (Thinking Globally/Principles of Global Studies), or equivalent
  • The course is offered as an online class, so you can participate in the academic component of class from anywhere. If your internship is out of state, you may still be eligible to enroll.

Important Details

  • The course is a letter-graded class and applies to your GPA. Coursework is completed with the INR 484 professor.
  • Internship credit must be earned during the semester in which a student completes the internship. Retroactive credit is not granted.
  • All paperwork and final approval must go through International Relations Internship Coordinator Dr. Tara Lennon before the student begins the internship.

How to apply and receive INR 484 credit 

  1. Find an internship related to politics, governance or public policy
  2. Complete the course application via ASU Handshake and email Dr. Tara Lennon at [email protected] after submission. In Handshake, select “Career Center" > “Experiences" > “Submit an Experience" and search for “International Relations Internship INR 484”. Ensure that you enter the correct email address under “Internship supervisor” information.
  3. If your internship is approved, you will receive an email letting you know you have received override approval and can now enroll in the INR 484 course.
    Enroll in the INR 484 Internship course for the approved number of credits. Default is "1;" use chevron to change the number of credits.
    Begin internship, complete internship and Canvas course assignments, learn from evaluation feedback, and represent ASU well!

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you are limited to earning 6 INR 484 credits per internship experience.  You may complete more than one internship during your time at ASU, however, and may earn additional credits (beyond the 6) that don’t go towards your major requirements, but do go towards your total upper division elective credits.

It is not necessary to be an International Relations major to do an internship for international relations credit. It is necessary, however, that a student has completed some coursework that is part of the international relations major before beginning an internship for international relations credit.

The first step, before you go through the application process, is to (1) be sure you are eligible for credit and (2) the internship organization/agency is approved by Dr. Lennon. After steps 1 and 2 are complete, then apply online by going to http://asu.joinhandshake.com/experiences and searching “International Relations Internship INR 484.”

No. You must be registered for INR 484 in the same semester that you complete your internship work.
 

No, your current job is not eligible to be considered for INR 484 credit.  However, if it can be demonstrated that you will be working on special projects OUTSIDE of your “normal” job duties, and it is related to international relations broadly, then we can discuss the possibility.
 

Yes. If you are a Barrett student, you will automatically receive honors credit for completing INR 484.
